Speed-Cycling on Road and Track

By

“CYCLOS.”

THE AMATEURS

The Manuleau Amateur Cycling Club was not favoured with good weather conditions last Saturday, when its weekly contests were advanced another stage. However, good support was forthcoming from a keen muster of 33 senior and junior contestants. The fact that, of these, 15 were of the latter class, was very gratifying to the officials.

S. Sargent, 3min, added another win to his record. He put in some good laps, considering his size. He easily downed his co-marker, A. Bowen, over the final sprint.

Junior champion E. Hall had to give way to the consistent C. Yule for time honours. A great rivalry exists between these two pedallers. There is not much between them.

A new type of race was introduced in the form of a time trial with restricted gears. The following table shows how the riders fared:

J. Wade gave his best exhibition to date in a time trial. That the small gear suited him was amply demonstrated when he clocked in 47sec ahead of the club’s unpaced champion, Jerry Whitten.

Jerry Whitten suffered his first defeat this season in a time trial. Without taking any credit from the winner, Whitten’s defeat was largely attributed to by the small g€>ar. Still, it is no disgrace to be beaten by as good a performer as the ex-club champion. * * * D. Fletcher, who won the sealed handicap, was also credited with third fastest time. On July 20 Fletcher won the 31-mile open handicap, also gaining fastest time. Saturday’s result again shows he relishes the wintry weather conditions. * * * These notes would not be complete without a word of thanks to Mr. F. K. Glass. Mi'. F. J. Casey and Messrs. Hope, Gibbons, Bimited, for their action in donating trophies last weekend. Actions of this kind greatly help the club officials to meet their obligations. * * 3» Next Saturday the senior race will be over five laps of both the Mangere and Ihumatao courses, a total distance of 53$ miles. The juniors will hold their usual one-lap event. A proven remedy for coughs, colds, sore throats, asthma, bronchitis and influenza—“NAZOß.” Praised by all. 60 doses Is 6d, 16

THE CASH RIDERS

The 19.4 mile road race conducted by the Auckland Cycle Club over three laps of the Alangere circuit last Saturday afternoon, attracted a field of 12 riders. Rain fell continuously, hampering the riders and soaking them to the skin.

What was undoubtedly the most popular victory of the season was . that registered by Dave Storey. Off 3smin,

he put in some good pedalling. This is his first win this year, although he has a dead-heat for second place with Ken. Mathieson and two fastest times to his credit. Dave performed well in the Clevedon classic. Recognised as ono of the best ~ pacemakers in the club, he is deserv- _ success. Now that he is in form he will be a thorn in the side of the middle men. * * * T. Lowndes, 4&min, was again in the money. Tim is a very consistent performer. His second last week gave him no fewer than seven placings to date. He is certainly treated very liberally by the handicapper, as Lowndes is very hard to head off. The Papakura enthusiast, W. Francis. 4 min, was third. This is his first placing to date. Ilis action in putting in some good work with Storey is to be commended. A good sport, Francis fully deserved his placing. Perhaps one of the best performances was that registered by L. Pinfold, off 2&min. Dropping his comarker, W. Archer, in the first mile, he went on to drop Hall. After that, he rode the remainder of the journey on his own. Although only IS years of age, this convert from the amateur ranks will make a name for*' himself in professional class.

With Jim Lindop out of the way with a punctured tyre, Slater Hayes proved his superiority over the rest of his club-mates by annexing fastest time. The action of Slater in waiting for Harcourt, his co-marker, when the latter fell, amply demonstrates the spirit of good fellowship that exists. The race next week has been changed to a 32-mile handicap, over a different route, via Ota huh u. Pan mure. Ho wick, then back through Papatoetoe and Mangere Central, to the finish at Mangere Bridge. Mr. Edwards, a keen supporter of the club, has donated a. trophy to be added to the prize of this event.
