HAWKE’S BAY RUGBY TEAM TO PLAY AUCKLAND UNION’S WEEKLY MEETING Hawke’s Bay Rugby representatives who will play Auckland on Saturday will arrive in the city by the Rotorua express tomorrow, according to a letter received from the Bay Union by the Management Committee of the Auckland Rugby Union at a meeting presided over by Air. H. Frost last evening. It was also mentioned that Air. H. King would be the manager of the team, which is to leave for Dargaville on Alonday morning. Team managers for representative fixtures were appointed as follow: Auckland A v. Hawke’s Bay, at Eden Park on Saturday, Air. A. Tily; Auckland B v. South Auckland, also at Eden Park on Saturday, ATr‘. A. Baker; senior B grade representatives v. Rangiriri. at Rangiriri on Saturday, Air. A. Bayliss; Auckland A v. Dargaville, at Dargaville, Air. J. Aluir. The Junior Alanagement Board reported that the sixth grade competition had been closed, Manukau being, declared the’ winner. The board’s action was confirmed. Some surprise and a little indignation was expressed by members at a telegram from the secretary of the Canterl ury Union asking that the names of three outside referees be submitted for selection to control the Canterbury v. Auckland match to be played at Auckland on August 31. Air. G. Nicholson suggested that the New Zealand Union be asked to appoint a referee. Remarking that the Canterbury Union’s action was contrary to custom in inter-provincial matches other than Ranfurly Shield games, Air. A. Belcher moved that the visitors should be asked to select an Auckland referee from the provincial list. It was unanimously decided to follow a course of action in accordance with the motion.
A letter will be sent congratulating the Wairarapa Union on retaining the Ranfurly Shield. The Newton Club protested against the Junior Management Board’s ruling in regard to disallowing the transfer of Geard from Eden. It was resolved to uphold the appeal, and the transfer was granted, Geard being graded third open. The following ground officials were appointed for Saturday:—Showgrounds, ATessrs. Worsfold, Connynham. Onehunga: Air. Williams. Avondale: Air. Billingham. North Shore; Mr. El worth. Domain: Air. Spa.rkes. Point Chevalier; Air. Jiayhow, Kohimarama: Air. Weaver.
WAIKATO BEATEN
HAWKE’S BAY ON TOUR VISITING BACKS TOO GOOD (From Our Own Correspondent) HAAIIETON, Wednesday. Although Waikato succeeded in drawing with Hawke’s Bay last month, it suffered defeat by 11 points to 3 at the return match played in Hamilton today. Waikato was unfortunate in having some of its best men away, the absence of S. Thomas, the veteran fullback, making a world of difference as far as defence was concerned. The forwards were a strong enough pack, but the backs were nowhere equal to the visitors, who handled the ball faultlessly and played a sound, attacking game. A BRISK START Waikato drew first blood when Allen charged down the line for a try. The play in the fii'st half was staged chiefly in the Waikato twenty-five. In the second quarter the visitors opened up the play, North, Setford, Baird and Brodie figuring in several passing
movements. The Hawke’s Bay for- j wards had the best of the lineouts and i forced Waikato back from the line time and again. Campbell, the visiting skippc'r, equalised the scores by touching down. From a scrum the visitors worked the short side, McKay sending his pass from the half-back to Brodie. - The threequarter gathered ' in brilliantly and dived across to score. Roach goaled with a fine effort. Waikato attacked hotly just before the interval, but Hawke’s Bay retaliated with several loose rushes. CLEVER BAY BACKS The home defence was demoralised by the rapidity and decisiveness or the Hawke’s Bay attacks on resumption and another passing rush culminated when Evans secured a try. Setford missed an ehsv shot at goal. Waikato toiled within striking distance as the game drew to a close, but efforts tc* penetrate the defence wore frustrated by faulty handling. There was a good deal of futile kicking during the latter stages. Kemp saved Waikato on several occasions. The match ended with the visitors still fresh, and attacking leaving the final scores; Hawke’s Bay -i i Waikato . . ; 3 SATURDAY'S FIXTURES Sa J tS"?ay n ,lext I C the Kusby stores for Representative.
