NORTHCOTE BOROUGH COUNCIL

The fortnightly meeting of the Northcote Borough Council was held last evening, the Mayor, Llr. A. E. Greenslade, presiding. The borough overseer reported that the work on the Valley Road track, authorised in connection with the soldiers' unemployed relief, is well in hand. Three returned men are employed on this Work. ~

The council's request for a, suitable exit. at the rear of the l‘alais Picture Theatre had been complied with by the proprietor, but no building permit had been applied for or the plan submitted for approval. In the opinion of the building inspector, the exit was still dangerous. Further action was re—ferred to the \Yorks Committee.

The waterworks engineer reported that the. Takapunu. Lake level was six inches above high-water mark, an increase of 4% inches for the month of July. The request of the Taltapuna Borough Council that the charge for Takapuna ratepayers receiving water from the Northcote Council’s mains in Northcote Iload be at the rate of 1s 6d a 1,000 gallons was referred to the Finance Committee. The Mayor remarked that this was an annual rev quest, but as they charged their own ratepayers 25 a 1,000 gallons, any reduction was out of the question. The Department of Health notified that 311'. A. E. Barrett had been appointed sanitary inspector in lieu of Mr. J. Hughes, who had been trans—ferred. The appointment was con—firmed, and a. letter of appreciation is to be forwarded to the late inspector for his services. The town clerk of the Devonport Borough Council, as No. 2 Licensing Authority, advised that the No. 2 Licensing Authority agreed with the council's contention that all buses containing passengers should run direct to the entrance of the ferry Wharf and discharge its passengers before turning or reversing the running of the vehicle. The Licensing Authority, however. was of the opinion that the question could best be dealt with by the council adopting a. by-law regulating traffic stands. It was decided to inform the Licensing Authority that the council had adopted the Government Omnibus regulations, and requesting that in future this condition be enforced when licences are issued. An inspection of the Fire Brigade by members of the council will be made on September 2.
