“APPLE SAUCE” HIS MAJESTY’S NEXT SATURDAY
The only two attractions that were not affected by the “talkies” and the timber strike in Melbourne were “The Desert Song” and “Apple-Sauce,” and the chances are that had there been no strike on during the run of “Apple - Sauce” this delightful comedy, which is to be staged here for the first time at His Majesty’s on Saturday night next, would have broken all known Australian records. “Apple-Sauce,” which was written by the author of “The Patsy,” will introduce to playgoers of New Zealand the two famous New York comedy stars, Aliss Ruth Nugent and Mr. Alan Bunce, whose brilliant acting greatly assisted to make “Apple-Sauce” one of the most successful plays ever staged in tho Commonwealth.
“Appple-Sauce,” wrote a Sydney critic, is a great entertainment—fresh and brisk, its humour quaint, quick and natural, the sentiment delightful, and the artists are perfectly placed in their various roles. The term “Apple-Sauce” has come into popular use. It may be defined as “soft soap,” or compliments. “Stop your kidding” is another way of explaining it. “Apple-Sauce” can only be staged for a limited number of performances as during the season, which must be confined to 10 nights, will also be staged “Laugh That Off” and “Pigs,” both of which were outstanding successes in America and which enjoyed long sessions in Sydney. The box plans will be opened at Lewis Eady’s on Thursday morning.
