The District Engineer of Railways, Ohakune, has informed the Taumarunui Borough Council that the department is responsible for only a distance of 33 feet from the centre of the railway line, where roads are traversed, and therefore nothing could be done in the way of maintenance to the approaches to the Matapuna Bridge over the Wanganui River.
In connection with the big Mcjori film to be produced at Tokaanui, it is announced that the following officials will give assistance:—Hoani Te Heu Tukino, paramount chief of the NgatiTuwharetoa tribe; the leading Rangatiras of the Taupo Lake District Alfred Grace, secretary of the Tuwharetoa Trust Board: and Mr. Janies McDonald. former acting-director of the Dominion Museum.
At the annual meeting of the Ohura Valley Dairy Company an important notice of motion affecting the directorate was moved by Mr. N. J. B. Dougherty with the object of preventing any person from becoming a director who does not hold 10 shares in the capital of the company, and is a bonafide member supplying not less than I,ooolb. butter-fat in any one season. The matter was keenly debated, and the motion finally lost by a voting strength of 19 to 16. * * *
The following Matiere boys have been awarded certificates for swimming by the Christchurch Swimming Association:—Learners’ 50yds., James Barker and Owen Turner: proficiency certificate, 220yds., James Margan, Bryan Pleasants, Noyal Pleasants and Owen Turner.
The Short’s Ford traffic bridge over the Taringamotu River, Taringamc u. is materialising after many years’ negotiations. The structure is vitally needed, especially in the winter, and its completion will be a great convenience to numerous settlers. All material necessary for the erection of the bridge has been conveyed to the .site, and work is under way on the approaches.
The rainfall recorded in the MaGere district for July was 7.25 inches, against 3.2 inches for July, 1928.
At the last meeting of the Ohura Town Board, the chairman. Mr. Flanagan, tendered his resignation on account of early departure from the district. The members of the board expressed great regret at Mr. Flanagan’s departure, the resignation being accepted. The Mayor, 'Mr. C. A. Boles, at the meeting of the County Council, in reply to a question from Cr. (Rev.) J. E. Ward, said he had read the book, “All Quiet on the Western Front," and he considered it should not be available to young people. The council decided to ban it from the municipal library. The town clerk, Mr. I. A. Webb, was instructed to institute proceedings against Messrs. Carroll and O’Reilly on the grounds of alleged breaches of borough by-laws in connection with certain buildings erected by their firm The Under-Secretary of the Lands and Survey Department wrote authorising the Domain Board to allow the Taumarunui Rod and Gun Club to construct trout-holding ponds on the Rangaroa Domain.
