WIDOWS’ SACRIFICE
STRUGGLE TO GIVE CHILDREN UNIVERSITY COURSES PLEA FOR ASSISTANCE “Few people realise how many widows struggle to give their children a university education,” said Sir George Fowlds, president of the Auckland University College, in the course of his address at the graduation ceremony held this afternoon in the Town Hall. “In most deserving cases pride takes pains to conceal the position. Let us hope that these mothers, in the end, will receive tangible return for their sacrifices. But it is one of the tragedies of life that until we marry and became parents we have little knowledge and appreciation what our parents have done for us.” Without doubt, he continued, there would be for many years war widows in this position. A special fund for such cases would be most desirable. There was the possibility of a still further roll reduction in view of the low birthrate in war years. Because of this the council had to see to it that exten- ; sions and new departures were properly financed.
