Among those at the "Royal Hotel I are Mr. and Mrs. H. Topkin, of Bar- i gaville. Mr. and Mrs. YY". J. Brooke, of Sydney, are among the guests at the Star Hotel. Mr. and Mrs. Tomlin, of YVairarapa, are on a visit to Mrs. J. W. Clark, Morrinsville. Miss Main, Auckland, is on a holiday visit to her sister, Mrs. D. Gubb, Mangataparu, Morrinsville. Miss Rosemary Waller., of Auckland, is spending a few days with Mrs. A. E. Manning, in Hamilton. Miss Rhoda Heather, of Auckland, is on a visit to Morrinsville, being the guest of Mrs. W. N. Tangye, Piako.' Miss Ellen Melville is at present in Wellington to attend the conference of the Dominion Reform League. Miss Beryl Wliestler, of Auckland, a graduate of the Balcrose School of Eurhythmies, London, and her pupils, Miss E. Robertson and Miss Pahfeld, were in Hamilton on Tuesday and gave demonstrations of their work at the Diocesan School before a large number of- interested spectators.
TEMPERANCE UNION PROTESTS BY AUCKLAND EXECUTIVE The Auckland district executive of the Women's Christian Temperance Enion held its monthly meeting on August 5. Mrs. Lee Cowie, who was warmly welcomed, presided over a representative gathering. Much sorrow was expressed in the less of one of the most earnest and faithful workers. Mrs. Eulljames, district superintendent of Maori work. Plans for the district convention, to be held next month, were fully discussed. Miss McLay’s itinerary was also arranged. A very satisfactory report was received of the temperance stall conducted at the recent winter exhibition. Resolutions of protest were passed against any increased facilities for gambling and granting of a permit to establish a brewery on the Main South Road at Otaliuhu. also the opening of picture theatres on Sundays for ’benefit performances. ENJOYABLE CARD PARTY MANGERE EAST CROQUET CLUB The monthly progressive 500 afternoon. held under the auspices of the Mangere East Croquet Club, was held on Tuesday in the Mangere ITall supper room. There was a. large attendance of members of the club and their friends, and visitors were present representing a number of the neighbouring clubs. Mrs. E. H. Solomon, president, extended a cordial welcome to the large and after a number of keenly contested games, presented Mrs. Woods, of the Otahuhu Club, with the first prize trophy, and Mrs. Robinson with the trophy for th-e hidden treasure competition. WHITFORD DANCE FOR EARTHQUAKE FUND A very succeelsrui dance in aid of the Earthquake Relief Fund was held in tlie AY hitford lltj.ll on Saturday, August 3. It was organised by the following committee:—Mrs. Mulvihjll, Mrs. Findlay, Miss Marjorie tVurd and Miss M. Yeats, Mrs. Ward and Mr. J. F. Findlay. The fund will benefit by £ll 10s Cd. VICTORIA LEAGUE GIRLS' BRIDGE PARTY On Thursday afternoon the Girls’ Branch of the Victoria League held its monthly bridge party at the Evelyn Firth Home for Returned Soldiers. Prizes were won by Mr. Gilbert and Mr. Chaney. Among the players were Mrs. Rickerby. Miss Win Rent (convener), Misses K. and D. Thompson. Miss Linda Do Renzy, Miss Stevenson, Miss Sherer. Miss Daphne Rainerer, Mrs. Watson and Misses Sanders. MORRINSVILLE DANCE ENJOYABLE ITEMS GIVEN Perfect arrangements ensured the complete success of the Morrinsville Dairy Company’s suppliers’ social and dance, which took place in the Regent Ball. Seldom has the hall accommodated such a large gathering. 1 During the evening songs were i given by Mrs. J. J. Seales, Mr. and Mrs. Topham, and Mr. A. Ripley, Auckland: humorous monologues by Mr. McElwain, Auckland; and a stepdance by Mr. Munro. Dances were held between the items, the music being played by Noffke’s Rhythmic Pour, with extras by Miss Z. Howarth and Mr. D. Pirrit. The duties of masters of ceremonies were carried out by Messrs. B. J, Pirrit and J. Gaddes.
