RICH MAN AVOIDS £BOO m TAXES FINED £IOO AND COSTS Press Association WELLINGTON, Today. In the Magistrate’s Court this morning Charles Thomas Keeble pleaded guilty to failure to furnish returns of land. It was stated for the Lands Department that there was only one information, but the history of defendant’s relations with the department showed the case was more serious than usual.
After hearing the facts, Mr. E. Page, S.M., said:—“l will nave to impose a heavy penalty in this case. For two year? past the department has rendered defendant, who is a wealthy man, assessments on land valued at £54,000, and defendant let these go, although in the meantime he knew he had acquired more land, bringing the value up to £68,000. Defendant said nothing and avoided the additional tax of £BOO over two years, though this was subsequently paid. A fine of £IOO was imposed, with costs. David Daily was fined £ 5 and Alfred Ernest Ellery and Thomas Ellery £2 on similar charges.
