TREES THREATENED
HAMILTON AVENUE MAY BE DESTROYED PLANTED 50 YEARS AGO (From Our Own Correspondent) HAMILTON - , Thursday. Over 50 years ago the early military settlers planted an avenue of plane trees along Grey Street, Hamilton East, making it in summer one of the finest esplanades in New Zealand. At the meeting of the Hamilton Borough Council last evening, the opinion was expressed that the trees were hindering the building progress in that part of the town, and should be eradicated. Only one councillor. Mr. A. J. Denz, spoke in favour of their retention. On his motion, the question was referred to the works committee. Some months ago the council decided to remove a big tree in Grey Street known sentimentally as “the grand old man of Hamilton East.” So strong was the public outcry that the council was obliged to rescind its former resolution.
