NEARLY FORTY DEAD
HORROR OF THE OSTEND HARBOUR DISASTER HEARTRENDING SCENES (United I*.A..—By Telegraph — Copyright) (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) Reed. 9 a.m. OSTEND, Monday. Nine more bodies of victims of tlie harbour collision have been recovered, making the dead total 24. Twenty-nine of the injured are in the hospital, and a woman has died there. It is believed that there are still 15 bodies lying in the harbour. When the collision sunk a pleasure boat, few of the people in the water were able to swim and their heartrending cries lor help added to the horror of the tragedy. There was a mad stampede from the city to the beach as the news of the disaster spread. Artificial respiration had to be resorted to in several cases. One woman was frantic \\jth grief at the loss of her young daughter, whose yellow jacket could be seen floating on the water. A man who was on the pier saw his wife and daughter drowned. He was taken to hospital in a demented condition. Thousands of people gathered at the pier-head, where they remained weeping long into the night hoping to gain information about the missing.
