Inter-Naval Soccer
NEW ZEALAND MEETS FRANCE Attractive Programme Tomorrow FOB the first time in Soccer history here, a team of French exponents will take the field at Blandford Park, when the players from the cruiser Tourville will meet sailors from H.M.S. Philomel. The preliminary match will be a championship bout between Tramways and Y.M.C.A. The championship series will also conclude with outside games between Shore and Onehunga, Celtic and Ponsonby, and Thistle and Belmont.
Among the 900 officers and crew of j the visiting French cruiser are many clever exponents of the Soccer code, and although the players are a bit out of practice they have benefited by finding their shore legs at Victoria Park during some intensive training. The visitors rely more on clever footwork than weight to develop their game, and it will be interesting to compare the standard of play between our bluejackets and marines with the matelots of the Tourville. Our own men play a solid and robust style of football, while the French are more of the volatile and mercurial type. The game has made great strides in France, and our guests are no novices at the game. By the kind permission of the commanding officer. Captain Abrial, the splendid band of the Tourville will give a special musical programme, and the .preliminary game between the champion Tramways team and Y.M.C.A. should provide a sparkling conclusion to the season's championship scries. The remainder of the Auck and representatives will be chosen this afternoon after the final trials. As Mr. R. The day will start at 2 p.m. with the leaders of the intermediate section, Mount Albert and Auckland. At 3 p.m. Takapuna Grammar plays Auckland, and in the big match at 4 pm. the unbeaten Mount A’bex't Grammar senior eleven will meet Technical College, which has only lost one game, and is in hard training to lower the light blues’ colours. JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS The stormy weather of the past few weeks has led to the closing of several grounds, and the order of running in most of the minor championships has become disorganised. With the school holidays intervening it will be some time before the grade championships can be completed, and the knock-out competitions begun. THIRD GRADE OPEN
