PRIZE NIGHT

DEVONPORT YACHT CLUB FUNCTION TROPHIES PRESENTED Devonport Yacht Club was “running before the wind” at its annual prize night in the Masonic ITall last evening. President G. Trevithick was at the helm and kept the pace up and the crew under strict control. The Mayor of Devonport, Mr. E. Aldridge, distributed the prizes—a lengthy task —and the winners were accorded hearty applause, particularly so in the case of Master Carter, of the Jonquil (Tauranga class), who was awarded a special prize of a half sovereign by Mr. W. C. Coldicutt. The same man, formerly a keen yachtsman on the Manukau, has donated a handsome cup to the Yacht Club, to bo won three times in succession, or five times at intervals. The announcement of this offer by the chairman brought applause, and Mr. Coldicutt made a sporting offer that as soon as any yachtsman could come along and say, “I have won the cup,” he would “fill it up.” Representatives of the Squadron, Akarana, Point Chevalier and other city clubs attended, and the toast of the visitors was suitably acknowledged. Mr. Aldridge said that the British Navy was recruited from the youth of the nation, and training the youth in seamanship and boat handling was a valuable preliminary for naval purposes.

The most important trophies were won by the following:—Rakoa, Duder Cup; Delville, “Herald” Cup; Secret. Edwin Cup; Fay, Jellicoe Cup; special 18-foot class, Maratea, rose bowl. Concert items were supplied by Messrs. Stan Pritchard, Rex Yates, J. Bruce, Hallahan. F. Jones and Price.
