Championship at Stake

devonport to meet marist

League’s Attractive Programme

PONSONBY—CITY AS CURTAIN RAISER

LEAGI- E iootball lave at Carlaw Park: tomorrow promises a slight international flavour, and in the feature match of the da; - , in which Shore will meet Marist, it is more than likely that the senior grade championship competition will be decided. A win for the seasiders and they will clinch the competition honours. Then, as a curtain-raiser, Ponsonby will meet City in a same which has a deal at stake and which promises as much good football and excitement for the fans as the big fixture.

In the first round the only team really to trouble Shore was Marist and c n that occasion the teams left the field with honours even. Throughout the second round Marist showed a groat improvement in its standard of play, while Shore had a more chequered experience, being defeated by City and losing many of its best players through injuries. Tomorrow, however, both S teams are hopeful of striking their j best form and fielding their usual players. It should be a great game, as there is much at stake, and both sides, favoured with the right material, are capable of giving an exhibition of the best club football played. Besides the Monteith Shield being 1n dispute, t h® Thistle Cup also hinges on the result. Of Ponsonby and City, which win m ect in the curtain-raiser, the former side has the more consistent record, j although during this round City has risen to great heights. That was when it put the once invincible Shore Leaguers down. Since, however, it has gone down itself to Marist. It would bo no easy task to forecast tomorrow's result. Richmond will play Newton at the Domain, while Ellerslie will meet Kingsland at Ellerslie. The senior grade B and junior competitions will also bo continued. JUNIOR NOTES Auckland League fans were treated to some line football at Carlaw Park last Saturday, when, apart from the big Northern Union Cup game which, of course, attracted much attention, the Auckland junior representatives met the South Auckland junior representatives. Had the conditions been suitable, League football at its very best would have been witnessed in the junior match; but even as it was, on a wet ground, the display given by the Aucklanders was undoubtedly a credit to them. • * • Glen Lynn v. Northcote On No. 2 ground, Carlaw Park, last Saturday, Glen Lynn sixth B team met Xorthcote and went down in a good tussle. Although losing, many of the Glenn Lynn players made a good showing, which is well worthy of comment. Nicklin on the wing showed that he has plenty of speed, and although not doing so well in the first half came to light well during the second and made some fine runs. Pearson on the other wing is also very speedy, but a.s yet cannot be colled a heady player. Barlow at centre is favoured with the art of cutting-in, which he does to perfection. Pie is also very sure in his handling, but has yet to learn to run up to his man before passing out. Lewis is sound on both the defence and attack, but the palm must go to halfback Vaughan, who is very clever and elusive. The forwards played well, especially in the second spell, those standing out for special mention being Tannihill, Milne and Brady. A Good Team The Devonport third intermediate side, which is at present leading in the competition, is undoubtedly the finest team in the grade, and it is certainly no fluke that it leads the way. This thirteen shows excellent combination, and on Saturday’s play, when it met Akarana and defeated that side by 5 points to 0, Smith at fullback was one of the stars. He was responsible for saving his side time

and again. Seagar and Young, the two five-eighths, play well together, while Darragh at halfback, although not of the dazzling type, plays very solid football. Perhaps the best forward in the team is Chester, who is a front row man. He is a great worker and it looks as though he lias a fine football career ahead of him. Stallard is also a very fine forward and led the pack last Saturday. * * * Even Going In an even tussle last Saturday, Richmond 6 B “A” went down to Marist by 3 points to 0. Marist managed its try in the last ten minutes of the game. At times, however, this game was marred a good deal by too much talking among the boys, and for this it is quite possible that the Richmond coach will have some of his lads on the mat before they take the field again. Then there was too much kicking and not sufficient passing. In reviewing this game, mention must be made of Glover, the Marist fullback, who played a good game. He kicks and handles the ball very well. Halfback Shultz is favoured with a quality not always evident with boys, and that is unselfishness. He gets the ball away to his backs whenever lie has a chance. The two Verralls both played solid games for Richmond, although L. Verrall would improve his play if he kicked a little more and dal not try to beat too many men. Michael, the Richmond half, proved himself a. fine defensive player, but real" spoiled his display by not feeding Ids rearguard more. Both sets of forwards gave good displays. Milicicb, the Richmond hooker, got the best of the ball in the scrums, although Dobbin did quite well for Marist. But the best forward on the ground was Thompson, of Richmond. He plays breakaway, and is a very hard worker.
