CRADLE TO GRAVE

HEALTH MINISTER’S HOPES A NEAT REPLY (TUB SUN’S Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, Wednesday. A touch of humour in a reply to a question with a touch of humour brightened appreciably the formidable list of Ministerial answers that came before the House this afternoon. On the whole, the Minister of Health, the Hon. A. J. Stallworthy, scored neatly off his questioner, Mr. H. S. S. Kyle (Riccarton) asked the Minister (1) whether his attention had been called to a leading article appearing in the “Wyndham Herald” of February 26, in which it stated he was reported to have said, “It is the function of my department to increase the birth rate, decrease the death rate and make the whole distance from the cradle to the grave longer, happier and easier”? (2) If this was the Minister’s policy, would he have it outlined and presented to the House? Mr. Stallworthy replied: (1) Yes. (2) Yes, in due course.
