CLERGYMAN’S SYMPATHY
INCIDENT AT FUNERAL COMMENT ON PRIEST’S ACTION , (Special to THE SUN). OHURA, Today. Strong remarks were made by the Rev. S. W. Golding, Anglican minister, when officiating at the funeral at Ohura of Mrs. Margaret Carlyson, a Roman Catholic. Mr. Golding said: “I know that I am echoing the sentiments of all present in offering to Mr. Carlyon and family our sincere sympathy in their bereavement. Mrs. Carlyon was a true Christian. She was a friend of mine. She was noted for her liberality and hospitality. There are hundreds here who can testify to that fact. “When I was asked if I would bury Mrs. Carlyon I said that I would be pleased to do so. And in this respect I want to say that I was surprised and pained when I learned that the priest had refused to bury her because she was married by a Church of England clergyman. I consider that his refusal to perform this service is reprehensible. and deserves severe censure. It may lie ‘churcliianity,’ but it is not Christianity.”
