WILKIE SEASON ENDS
SHERIDAN’S, “THE RIVALS” Mr. Allan Wilkie’s Auckland season concluded last evening with "The Rivals,” Sheridan’s brilliant comedy. The presentation of this comedy was carried out beautifully. The dress of the period was designed with taste, and emphasised the elaborate and eccentric gowns worn when Bath was England’s centre of fashion. The characterisations were excellent. Miss Hunter-Watts gave a fine portrayal of Lydia Languish, and Mr. Wilkie, as Sir Anthony, gave another excellent stage picture. One of the best performances of the evening was Miss Forbes’s Mrs. Malaprop. Mr. Marsh played his hero with a keen appreciation of the manners of the period. Mr. Sheldrick’s work was delightfully even. Mr. Cairns veiled a Scottish accent with an Irish brogue, and did it very well. Mr. Cameron, Mr. Keane and the other members of the company completed an excellent picture. It is a that Mr. Wilkie did not give more than three performances of
"The Rivals” in Auckland, for the comedy? is delightful and appealing, and altogether a better spectacle than "She Stoops to Conquer.” Mr. Wilkie has delighted Aucklanders, and it is with regret that we see his season concluded.
