NEW SOUTH WALES TEAM OUTCLASSED
TWENTY POINTS TO 12 (United P.A..—ISy Telegraph — Copyright) AUCKLAND, Wednesday. The All Blacks defeated New South Wales today at Sydney by 20 points to 12. The game teas played in flue weather, with the turf in good condition in spite of the recent rains. The attendance was 3,000. Play was not impressive at any stage. as both teams were too lackadaisical in their methods. Lilburne
was the most conspicuous figure ou the field. • It must be noted that the home colts’ forwards got most of the ball from the scrums. In penalties the teams were about equal. Mr. Cooney was referee. The teams were as follow:
NEW ZEALAND Fullback. —Carleton. Threequarters.—Waterman, Hook. Geddes. Five-eigli ths.—Tuck, Lilburne. Halfback.—Leys. Wing-forward.—Porter. Forwards.—Mahoney, Snow, Ivivell, Sonntag, Reside, Souter, Palmer. NEW SOUTH WALES Fullback. —Burke. Threequarters—Hemingway, Towers (captain), Hinds, White. Five-eighths.—Rutliven. Halfback.—Duncan. Forwards. —Reeves, Munsie, Abbott, Elias, Moore, Rodger, Judd, Waddington. These players are mostly young. New South Wales won the toss and took advantage of the strong wind. Play for a quarter of an hour was of a desultory nature, chiefly in New Zealand’s quarter. Five minutes later from a scrambling rush a player forced his way over the All Blacks’ ( line. Rutliven failed to convert. New South Wales .... 3 • All Blacks 0 From the kick-off play was rapidly i transferred to the New South Wales I end of the field, where Lilburne ' secured and, making a dashing solo ! run, scored and converted his own I try. All Blacks 5 ; New South Wales .... 3 New South Wales replied immediately with a. strenuous effort and pressed the visitors back to their own end of the field. Here Hinds made a brilliant opening and transferred to Towers, from whom the ball went to Hemingway, the last-named scoring in a good position. Ruthven’s kick failed. New South Wales .... 6 All Blacks 5 New Zealand then forced play upfield, and Leys, Tuck and Lilburne participated in a brilliant passing rush, a certain score being lost through Hook fumbling. Play had not been up to representative form, being of a scraggy and disjointed character, although several New South Wales men had shown fine individual work. Upon the resumption play hovered at midfield until a passing rush almost saw New South Wales over the All Blacks’ line again.
However, Carleton saved the situation by forcing. New Zealand then took a turn at attack, but a splendid combined movement was spoiled by the forwards over-running the ball and this cost the All Blacks another try. Continuing the attack from a good interchange of passing, the ball went to Geddes, who centred finely. Sonntag set his colleagues iti motion and Palmer crossed under the posts. Lilburne goaled. All Blacks 10 New South Wales .... 6 Play now began to sparkle. A fine run by Hinds put the home team on attack. Hinds transferred to Towers, who in turn passed ’ to Moore, who dived over under the posts. Rutliven missed the kick. All Blacks 10 New South Wales .... 9 The game now rapidly moved to the opposite end, where, from a penalty awarded 30 yards out, Lilburne kicked a fine goal. All Blacks 13 New South Wales .... 9 Continuing the pressure the All Blacks penned their opponents to their own twenty-five, where Lilburne snapped up and dropped a fine field goal. All Blacks . passing rush, hut this was stopped by solid defence. Then the New South Wales colts rushed play downfield, Hinds scoring at the corner. Towers just failed with the kick. All Blacks IT New South Wales .... 12 Porter next scored in the corner, but Lilburne’s kick failed to go over. All Blacks 20 New South Wales .... 12 At this stage Hinds was injured while trying to stop Porter.
