TAUMARUNUI NOTES

The Taumarunui Rugby Sub-Union . has resolved to grant the whole of the gate takings from the Athletic -Ongarue match at Ongarue next Saturday to the Ongarue Domain Board. With the exception of one item, the Taumarunui County Council’s schedule for the expenditure of thirds and halves has been approved by the Taranaki Land Board. Word has been received in. Taumarunui that the Rev. E. R. Alexander, Methodist minister, of Hauraki Plains, has been transferred to Ohura. His place at Hauraki Plains will be filled by the Rev. A. R. Thomas, of the Ohura circuit. Police-Sergeant G. Sivyer, who is to take charge of the Taumarunui district, was tendered a farewell by the Wanganui police force, who presented Mrs. Sivyer and himself with a set of tea china. Inspector Hill presided over the meeting, and a number of speakers testified to the officer’s good qualities. Sergeant Sivyer was also waited upon by the Wanganui licensees, who expressed their appreciation of the manner in which he had carried out his duties while in the city. The Kaitieke Herd-testing Association has just concluded the tenth successful year of its operations. The cows tested totalled 1,738, an increase of 175 over the 1927-28 season. The testing cost a cow worked out at the exceptionally low figure of Is Sd, this being arrived at with the aid of the Government subsidy of sixpence a cow, payable on animals that have been tested for at least four consecutive periods. The best testing record was put up by Mr. J. Blair’s herd of 37 (Taumarunui). the return being 386.97 lb of butter-lat in 262 days. The highest individual cow is owned by Mrs. J. H. Burnand, of Punga Punga, and produced 563.071 b of butter-fat in 223 days. The testing officer reports that the most pleasing feature of the season's work is the increased production over previous years. The association averages far the season arc:—Average cows, 1.549: 241 days, 253.571 b fat: highest lb fat; lowest herd, 3 cows, 103 days, 125.311 b fat; highest cow, 223 days, 563.071 b fat; lowest cow, 104 days, 42.50 lb fat.
