MAORI CHIEFTAINESS DIES AT 95 I i BORN IN QUEEN STREET Last direct descendant of the highborn Maori line of Hei, Rahera Tainui has died at Wharekaho, Whitianga, at the age of 95.
She was a chieftainess of the NgatiHei people—a tribe founded by Hei, who came from Tahiti to New Zealand on the Arawa canoe. Besides forming the tribe, Hei defined the tribal district, Waitahanui-o-Hei, and Whitianga. Rahera Tainui was born in the vicinity of what is now Queen Street, Auckland, when raupo swamp extended for a considerable distance. She went to her tribal lands when a girl. Possessing a wide knowledge of early days in the province, the chieftainess remembered clearly the wreck in 1841 of H.M.S. Buffalo. A son, two daughters, and a number of grandchildren are left. Many Maoris attended the funeral in Wharekaho tribal cemetery. The officiating minister was a member of the Ratana Church, the Rev. R. Hikairo. i**. =====
