OTAHUHU BOROUGH COUNCIL
Owing to the water consumption at tho OtahuhLi Railway Workshops exceeding 12,000,000 gallons per annum, the district engineer asked at last evening’s meeting of the Otahuhu Borough Council that a reduction on the present charge of Is 6d a l,0j)0 gallons be granted. Cr. Petrie’s recommendation that the application be not considered, lapsed for want of a seconder. He stated that the Auckland City Council was charging the Harbour Board more than that. After a short discussion the question was referred to the works committee for report. The annual subsidy of £3O was donated to the Otahuhu Fire Brigade. In replying to a letter from the council, dated September 16. 1927, asking for the installation of electriclights by the Railway Department, in Awa Street, the department advised that it had authorised the installation of three lights in this street, and will pay £5 per annum for each light. Permission was granted the St. John Ambulance Association to take up a street collection in Otahuhu on Friday, August 9. On the recommendation of the works committee, the clerk was authorised to advise the town clerk. Mount Eden, that the Otahuhu Borough Council is in sympathy with the proposal to form a provincial water board, and will give its moral support to the proposed Bill; but will not commit itself to any expenditure at the present time. Referring to a letter from the Auckland Automobile Association, asking that white lines be substituted for the traffic-domes, or' that the domes be removed from the kerbline to the building line, the traffic inspector reported that the traffic-domes at intersecitons are much more satisfactory, judged from the point of view of safety. He knew of no ease where traffic-domes in this district had contributed to any accident. The maintenance of white lines was a -rm rt aof consideration. The cost of permanent material was promoit., . If any alteration were to be made, he suggested the fitting of the existing domes with reflectors to indicate their position at night. The estimated cost was £2 a dome. After consideration the question was deferred. Cr. Grey reported that the parks and reserves committee had inspected the portion of the Great South Road between the monument and Tamaki Bridge, and selected sites for the planting of shrubs, in connection with beautifying the Great South Road. Mr. Grey said that a number of residents had donated shrubs for the work. The question of providing additional fire-plugs for parts of the borough was referred to the fire committee.
