CHILDREN’S WANTS
AT DEVONPORT SCHOOL COMMITTEE SYMPATHETIC Yesterday the members of the Devonport School Committee inspected the school, with a view to ascertaining what improvements might be effected. The scholars were equal to the occasion, for blackboards in two classrooms bore neatly executed legends, such as “We would like a sunny room,” “We would be so happy if our classroom was painted.” In the infant department, a silent request on the blackboard was for a gramophone. “It would help us in our singing.” The chairman, Mr. Parker, assured the children that one was on order, and as the committee was departing it had the pleasure of seeing the machine and records arrive. Mr. Jones, of the committee, presented first grade and other swimming certificates to those children who qualified last season. Fourteen children—two selected by each class, and one each by the headmaster and chairman of the committee—planted 14 trees, part of a shelter belt-to-be. Recently the committee erected a substantial fence to act as a breakwind on the south-west boundary of the school.
