RESTORING ROADS
NEEDS OFJVEST COAST DEPUTATION TO MINISTER Press Association WELLINGTON. Today. A deputation to the Minister of Public Works, the Hon. E. A. Ransom, today asked for relief in respect to earthquake damage in the Murchison district. Mr. Stewart, chairman of the county, said the position was hopeless. The county could not restore the damage. Free grants were needed to open up all the valley roads. A fourfoot stock track was wanted down the Buller Gorge. It was necessary that the Midland Railway should be completed as soon as possible, also the Lewis Saddle highway. Replying sympathetically, the Minister said the Buller Road would lie opened up, but the slips had to consolidate. All the arguments advanced Would be considered carefully. In introducing the deputation. Mr. C. G. Black, M.P., stated that £12,350 was wanted by the county to restore the. roads, £2,000 for the re-establish-ment of the hydro-electric scheme, tmd a grant of £2.000 to conserve the interests of the Public Trustee on a loan of £15,000.
