MILITARY TRAINING
I I SCHOOL REGULATIONS DEFINED ; NO COMPULSION UNDER 14 1 Boys under 14 years of age in at Itendance at a. secondary School are inot compelled to undergo training as lsenior cadets. Their parents may Ihave them exempted until they reach jthe age of 14. This information was conveyed in a letter from the Hon. H. Atmore, Minister of Education, which has been received by Mrs. M. B. Soljak, Ponsonby. Under all the provisions of the Defence Act, 1909, and its amendments, all boys who attain the age of 14 years in any year must attend for training on the first day of June in the same year, or at any later date on which they cease to attend the primary school. The regulations of the New Zealand Military Forces provide that pupils of secondary schools who are under the age of liability for training and WllO are physically fit in all respects, may, if their parents and the school authorities so desire, serve in the cadet unit. of the school. It is presumed‘ that this regulation would also apply! to technical schools.
There is nothing in the regulations for junior or senior free places to say that all boys holding free places must take military drill as part of their school work, unless they are over 14 years of age.
