SHOT HEN PHEASANT
UNLICENSED HUNTER FINED QUAIL ALSO IN BAG According to Robert Kennedy, the occasion on which a ranger examined his bag was the first time he has ever been out shooting. He is not likely to forget it as it cost him £lO at the Police Court this morning. Kennedy pleaded guilty on two charges, one of shooting a hen pheasant and one of killing a Californian quail without a licence. Mr. J. H. Rose prosecuted on behalf of the Auckland Acclimatisation Society. Counsel said that the pheasant and the quail had been found in ihe bag made by Kennedy and his companions when they were accosted by a ranger. Kennedy had admitted that he was responsible. Kennedy explained that he had been out after rabbits and had not intended to break the law. He had shot the pheasant as it was running along the ground thinking It was a rabbit. Defendant was fined £5 and costs on the first charge and £2 and costs on the second charge. Solicitor’s expenses were allowed at £1 Is on each charge.
