The first boy to be appointed to the | administrative branch is H. Tripe, ot [ Wellington, who is now in his way to [ Tangavika. Mr. A. C. Bay, secretary to the Selec- [ tion Board, stated today that the board, through its various University Selection Committees, would deal I with undergraduates as well as graduates. Applications by boys who were cot at a university college would also be sent forward to England, where the qualifications of the boys are considered. The service has the additional attraction that in the senior branches I officers are interchangeable between the various Crown Colonies. The question has been raised ot the posibilities of entry of the Biplomatic ; Service by New Zealanders. Mr. P. B. B. Nichols, liason officer I between the Foreign Office and the j Xew Zealand Government, who is on I loan from the British Diplomatic Scrf vice, states that all candidates for the service must proceed to London, and I there first be considered by the Selection Committee, and afterward sit for the examination prescribed. This procedure cannot be varied, as the examination is carefully planned to prevent entry by "cramming.” French and German are compulsory. Properly to study these languages a candidate would have to visit Europe in any case. Australia already has gained three j places In the Diplomatic Service, says Mr. Nichols, but vacancies arc few, sometimes only one a year, rarely more than four. The examination is competitive.
