Watchman Struggles with Demented Man
CAPTURE BY POLICE FOUND RINGING CHURCH BELL Press Association WAIMATE, Wednesday. Attired in pyjamas and with his feet* bare a demented man ran amok in the pouring rain at Waimate in the early hours this morning. His capture necessitated desperate means, for he was powerfully built. The man, who was an inmate of the Waimate Public Hospital, was seen to leave the building about 2.30 a.m. The police were informed, and after a long search he was discovered ringing the bell of the Roman Catholic Church. Besides the police several other people had been attracted to the spot by the prolonged ringing of the bell. Realising that the man was dangerous they rushed at him, and after a struggle he was overpowered and taken to the lock-up. Between the time that he escaped from the hospital and the time of his capture he encountered the watchman of some business premises, whom he pursued and fought. The watchman "as struck on the head with his own torch, which the man had secured. He would have been severely handled if the demented man had not ceased the assault suddenly and left him. The afflicted man has been committed to the mental hospital.
