GORED TO DEATH
THOUGHT ENRAGED BULL WAS ONLY PLAYFUL HELENSVILLE TRAGEDY The tragic death of John Clayton Rimmer, a single man, aged 57, and a farmer of Helensville, who was gored by an infuriated bull on July 10, was recalled when an inquest was held this afternoon. The coroner, Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., returned a verdict in accordance with the medical evidence, stating that he found the cause of the injuries to be an attack made on deceased by a bull on his own farm. The terrible injuries received by Mr. Rimmer were detailed by Dr. D. Murdoch, who examined him after he had been rushed to hospital. The man’s chest was crushed, and the complete collapse of both lungs led to inevitable death. Heroic but vain efforts to rescue Mr. Rimmer were made by Arthur John Skelton, who described the attack made bv the enraged animal, which had refused to leave its victim until peppered with pellets from a shotgun. Witness said he had always thought the bull to be dangerous, and it had attacked his son previously. Mr. Rimmer, however, had been convinced that the animal was only playful. The bull was now destroyed.
