DARKNESS AT HOSPITAL

PATIENTS JEOPARDISED BY POWER FAILURE NEED FOR STANDBY PLANT The number of recent electricpower failures in Auckland has alarmed the authorities r of the Auckland Hospital, who are urging the installation of a stand-by lighting plant. At yesterday’s meeting of the Hospital Board, a letter was received from the medical superintendent. Dr. C. E. Maguire, drawing attention to the number of power failures and stressing the urgent need for a stand-by plant. “Power failure may jeopardise the lives of the patients,” was his warning to the board. The chairman. Mr. W. Wallace, moved that a copy of the letter be forwarded to the Auckland Power Board. “There may be some explanation,” ho observed. Adding that a tentative estimate of the cost of a stand-by plant had fixed the amount at £3,000, Mr. Wallace said the board's engineer should be into report fully. This was agreed to.
