Varsity Students Go To Sea
MEMBERS OF CREW HARD AND WILLING WORKERS Travelling aboard the cargo steamer Canadian Conqueror as seamen are four university students from Canada. The vessel arrived at Auckland at ten o’clock yesterday morning from Montreal and Sydney (Nova Scotia), and is now discharging at Prince’s Wharf. The call of the wanderlust was insistent, and these young men decided to see the world during their vacation, and incidentally to get hardened for the coming term’s sport. The Canadian university holiday extends from the middle of May to October 1, and the lengthy respite makes such things possible where they are impossible for New Zealand varsity students. Three of these young men are from the famous McGill University, of Montreal. They are Messrs. A. F. Mackenzie, who is studying law; J. Ip. Minnes, who aspires to medical fame; and J. who is taking up architecture. The fourth student is Mr. E. K. Morton, who hails from the Dalhousie University of Halifax, Xova Scotia. He aims to be a journalist. His father is managing director of the Montreal “Herald.” They are all sons of well-known Eastern Canadian families, are about 19 years of age, and, with one exception, are employed on the Canadian Conqueror as deck boys. The fourth is messboy. “They are all hard and willing workers/* said Mr. A. Webster, the chief officer, this morning. “They found it hard for a start, but in a short time became used to the manual work. The bo’sun was nearly driven greyheaded at the beginning of the trip r but they soon adapted themselves to their duties.” These young men are unanimous in their liking for sea life. They think it is “great.” Some of them have had two weeks’ coal-trimming, and are feeling well hardened. King Xeptune paid a visit to one of them when “crossing the line,” and attended to his coiffure as only King Xeptune can.
