The Care of the Car Scratches on Glass Screens Scratches on glass screens can be rendered less conspicuous by rubbing rigorously with jewellers’ rouge or crocus powder mixed with methylated spirit. This preparation should be applied with a leather, then finish off witth a clean, dry leather. This will help considerably in making the blemishes less conspicuous; but the scratches will always show a litle. j A Miniature Screwdriver On some of the accessories of the car, such as the electric horn, there j are sometimes very small screws for which there is no sufficiently small screwdriver in the tool kit. A useful tool can be made very quickly by bend- ! ing a suitably sized pin open, so that ] one arm is at right angles to the other, filing the ends into the shape required. Closed Car Windows It isn't until some one slams a door and shatters the glass that the average car-owner commences to wonder how glass is replaced in the window frames. But if he studies the situation a bit he will discover that generally there are metal strips around the inside forming a frame. Loosening small screws releases these, and when they are out of the way the rest of the job is easy. Just lower the window a little so as to be able to grasp the top of the glass. Then pull the glass up and in. Setting the new glass into place is merely a matter of reversing the process. Be sure, however, to set the lower edge of the glass into the mechanism that raises and lowers it. An Elusive Knock A very mysterious engine knock can often be traced to a loose gland-nut ( on the water pump. On tightening ■ this nut the knock disappears immedi- : ately. 1 1 To Remove a Tight Wheel To remove a tight wheel when no puller is at hand, jack the vehicle up * and remove the cotter pin and nut • and endeavour to loosen by shaking back and forth, pulling on it at the same time, says an article in the “Goodyear News.” If this will not move it, remove the jack and remove the key in the hub of the wheel if possible and screw the nut on loosely. Now start the engine and run for a short distance, with someone watching the wheel. This method will loosen a tight wheel that a wheel puller will not budge. As soon as the wheel is found to be loose, jack the machine up again and carry on.
