HIS MAJESTY’S
ALLAN WILKIE ON SATURDAY Mr. Wilkie opens his 10 nights’ season at His Majesty’s on Saturday next with “She Stoops to Conquer,” or “The Mistakes of a Night,” for which the box plans open tomorrow morning at Lewis Eady, Ltd. Saturday’s comedy will be followed by Sheridan’s -wonderful plays, “The School for Scandal” and “The Rivals,” and Mr. Wilkie is producing the comedies in the lavish manner worthy of tho subjects. He has stated that the costumes used in these eighteenthcentury comedies will be the talk of the city. The opportunity of seeing these truly delightful pieces rarely occurs. They have a charm which is quite irresistible, not only on account of the piquant wit which is threaded through tho entrancing dialogue, but because of the costumes of the period. Gorgeous satin squarecoats and brocades, frillv. and ruffles, buckle shoes, powdered wigs, and so on, which enhance considerably the effect and are a feast to the eye. Goldsmith’s comedy, “She Stoops to Conquer.” is also rich in comic situations and immortal character studies, such as Mr. and Mrs. Hardcastl&, Kate Hardcastle, that splendid droll Tony Lumpkin, Young Marlow, and, in fact, every character down to the bucolic servants of tho Hardcastle house, is each a delight in itself. Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer announces the signing of several prominent New York stage directors. Bertram Harrison, who recently directed “Hold Everything,” New York musical comedy success, Edgar MacGregor, who is responsible for such successes as “New Moon,” “Follow Thru,” “Good News” and “Funny Face,” and Hassard Short, who attained prominence for his staging of the “Music Box Revues,” will all do talking picture work for this company.
