NEW CLUBHOUSE MOOTED
TAMAKI CLUB’S SCHEME In order to erect a clubhouse the Tamaki Yacht Club has applied to the Commissioner of Crown Lands for permission to lease the Bastion Rock. The commissioner referred the request to the City Council. He stated that the proposed building being adjacent to the new Waterfront Road it was considered that such a building should be of pleasing appearance and one that is not likely to detract from the scenic beauties of the future road, and in this connection it has l een suggested that although the “Rock” is not within the boundary of the city, the council would possibly, in the event of negotiations being completed with the club, be prepared to be cited as the approving authority with regard to any building which it may be proposed to erect. The acting-city engineer. Mr J. Tyler, reported at last Thursdays council meeting that the Bastion Rock was below high water mark, and, therefore, did not come under the jurisdiction of the council, but he was strongly of the opinion that if the rock were leased for the purpose of erecting a clubhouse, every' effort should be made to see that the building was of such a character as would not detract from the scenic beauties of the waterfront roadway. The council agreed to be cited as the approving authority and the commissioner will be requested to make it a condition to the club that the council’s consent is to be obtained before any building is erected. This baby of Auckland boating clubs, which is only in its fourth year, is to be congratulated on moving as it has done. As soon as it can build its own home it will pass from the stage of a club in the making to the dignity of one with some tangible evidence of prosperity.
