THAT £25,000 SUBSIDY
UNEMPLOYED RELIEF MAYOR WAITS ON PRIME MINISTER Whether the City Council will be granted an unconditional £ for £ subsidy on money it fines for unemployed relief now depends on the decision of Cabinet. This information was brought back from Wellington yesterday ov the Mayor, Mr. G. Baildon. who with the Mayors of the three other mu in centres had waited upon the P.ime Minister, Sir Joseph Ward, in connection with his subsidy offer of £25/;i*o. “A great deal has been said concerning the Government’s offer of a subsidy of £25,000 for unemployment relief, and the alleged tardiness of the City Council in accepting the offer,” Mr. Baildon said. “1 asked the Prime Minister straight if he would give us a pound for every pound we raised, as the people of Auckland intei preted his offer. “The Prime Minister’s reply was that he would bring the matter before the Cabinet. I think, therefore, that until we know the decision of the Government, it would be better to defer the calling of the special meeting of the council which was asked for last Thursday to consider unemployment relief works.”
