SEQUEL TO RAID
TWO WOMEN BETTORS IN COURT PENALTIES OF £25 Midday raids on a tobacconist shop at 7a Khyber Pass Road, and a fish shop, 11 Mount Eden Road, in which bookmaking was suspected, resulted in the appearance before Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., in the Police Court late yesterday afternoon of Ada McNaughton, 57, and Ellen Matthew, 42, on charges of using their premises as common gaming houses. John McNaughton and Chas. Jas. Matthew, who were also arrested, were charged with being found on the premises. The arrests were made by Detective-Ser-geants Doyle and McHugh. Chief-Detective Hammond withdrew the charges agains't the two men, stating they were on the premises, but had a right to be there. “Mrs. McNaughton has a shop in Khyber Pass Road and does a small amount of silver betting,” said the chief-detective. “The other woman has keen betting for some time. They are. however, both on a par,’ he said, exhibiting the betting slips seize’d to the magistrate. Mr. Hunt: Quite elaborate. They know the risks, he added, in imposing fines of £25 each on the two women. “They will pay,” added the magistrate. “Their principals will pay for them.” He allowed 24 hours in which to pay the fines.
