Orpha ns’Club Members Spend Merry Evening FUNCTION AT NORTHCOTE Blue and gold streamers decorated the hall and were entwined about the latticed cubicles in the Palais Theatre, Northcote, last evening, when the Birkenhead and Northcote Orphans’ Club held a very cheery Cabaret Night. Coloured lights were arranged along ! the sides of the hall, and mirrors hung j at intervals round the room were j sparkling pools of irridescence during j the twilight dances. The Snappy Seattle Six dispensed a j splendid programme of dance melodies. ' During the evening Miss Gwenth • MacNaughton and her pupils contributed several enjoyable items, a military ballet being particularly appreciated. Campbell was in a begonia shaded chenille gown with draped skirt. Mrs. A. McFetridge wore a delphinium blue petalled frock with silver x'eiief. Mrs. R. A. Johnston’s canton jade crepe faille gown was appiiqued with sprays of vio.ets. Mrs. R. Thompson wore pale gold lame over chartreuse green satin, and a black Spanish shawl. Mrs. Lawson had on a lace frock over ; shrimp pink georgette. Mrs. I. Muirhead had chosen a gown t of black and gold eastern chiffon. | Mrs. A. B. Maxwell wore ivory satin : and lace, with a frilled net skirt of uneven length. Mrs. Jack Willis was in sea foam green satin beaute with bouffant overskirt of j tulle. Mrs. R. Hayman wore a black velvet and lace gown. Mrs. N. Campbell had chosen a beaded georgette frock of Cuban orange. I Mrs. H. Hayman’s smart gown was of j pillar-box red. Mrs. F. Johnston wore radio blue georgette, relieved with silver. Mrs. L. W. Wright wore a black georMessenger was in & flowered chiffon velvet gown with diamente relief. BROCADE AND CHIFFON Yerv becoming was Mrs. W. B. Darlow’s 'gown of lettuce green brocade and chiffon. Mrs. Ashdowne’s frock was of forget-me-not blue georgette and gold lace. Mrs. E. Nicklin was in platinum embroidered taffeta. Mrs. R. Martin wore an embossed chenille gown with her rose coloured shawl. Mrs. E. Bakey wore a sequined georgette gown. . „ , Mrs. H. Dowsing was m flame coloured georgette and silver lace. Mrs. A. W. Stott had chosen ivory satin with bouffant overskirt of tulle. Mrs. D. Porter was in black crepe de chine and jet beadings. Mrs. F. Burston had chosen black satin and silver lace. Mrs. Roy Blake’s frock was peacock green taffeta, with uneven hemline of net appiiqued with gold rosebuds. Mrs. Pulfprd’s black gown was embroidered with floral medallions of silver tinsel. Mrs. A. "Wrights on had on a pretty frock of hyacinth crepe de chine. Mrs. C. Beckman wore peach georgette, with uneven hemline. Mrs. F. Clarkson had on Valencia blue ■ Mrs. D. Boles was in a period gown of black mariette. Mrs. A. J. Grant was in lacquer red taffeta. . , ~ Mrs. Fades -wore cameo pink satin, with a Chinese embroidered shawl. Mrs. C. E. Dowsing had on a black silver beaded frock, and rose silk ALICE BLUE GOWN Miss Doreen Clarke wore a picture frock of alice blue georgette over cloth of silver, with ankle length skirt of silver edged flared frills. Miss Norma Johnston wore a flowered ninon frock of chartreuse green, dipping at the back. . . . Miss E. Eaves was in hyacinth blue taffeta with uneven hemline. Miss E. Brunton wore flame satin with french bow of tulle. Miss E. Simpson’s period frock was of apricot satin. , Miss Wheatley wore mauve clienilie georgette. , . . Miss D. McPhail wore a becoming frock of marigold taffeta with hem of gold lace. Miss P. Barber was in black ring velvet of uneven length. Miss Nance Bartley had chosen an uneven length frock of coral georgette relieved with silver. Miss P. Honan’s frock was of flame taffeta. Miss T. Stinear wore ivory georgette and satin beaute. _ _ , Miss SI. Allan was in a pretty frock of rose pink georgette. A PEACOCK GOWN Miss Barbara Potter bad chosen a chic peacock gown of flowered sea foam green taffeta, with two-tiered skirt. Miss P. Litherland wore leaf green crepe fieuri with uneven hemline. Miss E. Lynch had chosen a ring velvet gown. Miss M. P. Lumsden had on a smart black gown of chiffon. . Miss Parkes was in a period gown of delphinium blue taffeta. Miss Marion Bathgate was m pastel petalled satin, softened with tulle. Miss E. McAneny had on sea-foam green crepe de chine. . Miss V. Marchant had on a picture frock of orange taffeta and tulle. Miss Alice McFetridge wore marigold georgette of uneven length. . Miss Mackay’s frock was of absinthe green georgette. , , Miss W. Johnson had chosen -a black crepe faille gown. Miss K. Norris chose leaf-green georgette. with which she wore a shell-pink Miss Nina Riley’s frock was sapphire blue georgette jyid velvet. Miss G. Picken wore black, chiffon-vel-vet, appiiqued in rose and silver. GEORGETTE AND LACE Miss Rona Burrett looked very charming in a daffodil georgette and lace Miss L. Edwards (Huntly) was in sunset pink satin and tulle. Miss L. Shutes wore a cyclamen georgette frock. Miss Zelma Sampson's frock was gold lame and fuchsia georgette, with shawl of toning shades. Miss May Weedon was in ivory' georgette and satin, with overdress of tulle. Miss Joan Williams was in lido blue satin and tulle. * Miss Jean Williams wore almond-green satin beaute and silver lame. Miss M. Stokes had chosen cedar rose crepe de chine and silver lame. Miss P. Le Clerc’s frock was of applegreen brocaded taffeta and silver lace. Miss W. Bartrom wore eau de nil eharmeuse, enriched with silver lace. Miss M. Lawson’s frock was primrose rins: velvet, with befrilled tulle skirt. Miss J. Hansen was in black ring velvet, , , , Miss Lola Martin wore a coral pink georgette frock over silver lame. Miss O. Reed wore an eau de nil chiffon velvet gown, with amber relief. Miss A. Wiltshire’s frock was of cyclamen taffeta, with lace motifs. Miss Phil Peterson wore a frock of lipstick red georgette. Miss Nance Chambers had chosen a .pastel tinted chiffon frock.

GIRLS’ PROGRESSIVE CLUB The committee and members of the Girls’ Progressive Club held a. very enjoyable dance at the Oddfellows’ Hall, Avondale, recently. Balloons, paper hats and streamers lent a. note of colour and greatly added to the carnival spirit. The orchestra supplied excellent music. Among those present were: Miss J. SURPRISE PARTY
OTAHUHU CROQUET CLUB The members of the Otahuhu Croquet Club paid a surprise visit to Mrs. Mclvor recently, a very enjoyable evening being spent. Musical items were given by Mesdames Gillies, Taylor, Jameson and Walters; humorous elocutionary items by Mrs. Leslie. During the evening the president, Mrs. Pearce, on behalf of the club members, presented Mrs. Mclvor with a handsome gold brooch and a leather attache case, as a token of appreciation for the valuable and untiring work she has done for the club.

An enjoyable card afternoon was given by the Rocky Nook Croquet Club on Tuesday.
Mrs. J. McAneny and Mrs. Aughton, joint hostesses, dispensed afternoon tea. The winners for the afternoon were Mrs. Maiden and Mrs. J. McAneny.
