Notes From the Council Chamber “I wish to tender my apology for my absence from the last council meeting,” announced Cr. J. R. Lundon, when apologies for absence were received from the Mayor, Mr. G. Baildon, and Cr. J. Donald. “Excuse —in bed. Reason—Maui Pomare influenza.” The Town-planning Committee is to act regarding a letter from Nicholson, Gribbin, Rogersen and Nicholson on behalf of Mr. B. Irvine, stating that, concerning an application to remodel a building at the corner of Karangahape Road and Liverpool Street —the application had been granted provided the council was indemnified against compensation that may be occasioned in the event of a widening scheme within 10 years—the client had been advised that there was not lawful authority permitting a local body to qualify a permit in such a manner. The client had been told that, laws complied with, a building owner was entitled to an unqualified permit. Cr. E. J. Phelan said that quicker action was needed in such questions. Cr. J. R. Lundon wanted the question, in which an important principle was involved, to go to the committee for report, but his amendment was lost. Steps are to be taken to effect the exchange between the Melanesian Mission Trust Board and the council of portion of the Selwyn Domain, Kohimarama, and define allotments in the Tamaki district. Whether a reception similar to that during the Emden visit will be held when the French cruiser Tourville is at Auckland from July 30 to August 7 will be left to the Mayor, Mr. G. Baildon, for arrangement. The Mayoress’s War Memorial Library League asked the council for a £ for £ subsidy on an amount of £2O given by the Returned Soldiers’ Association from the Poppy Day fund for the employment of incapacitated men in bookbinding. The request went to the Finance Committee, with power to act. Suggesting that council might consider the acquisition of a part of the Estate of Gribble and Buckley, Commercial Road, Mount Albert, which was shortly to be subdivided, the trustees of the estate pointed out that if the proposed bridge over the Archhill gully were proceeded with part of the land would be required for the construction of approaches. The Town Planning Committee will report. Special permission was given to Winstonf r td., to store 20,000 gallons of petrol i drums in a compound on its premies, Jellicoe Street. Bylaws required that such a compound be not less tb '.n 150 ft from any store, but only 50ft was available. Because there was no undue prejudice to public safety the dangerous goods inspector recommended that the modification clause of the by-law should operate.
