“Small” Bookmaker Pays Fine of £25
FRANK ADMISSION BETTING IN SWEET SHOP *‘l shall take into account the fact that he has made a frank admission and is only in a small way," remarked Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., at the Police Court this morning, fining Frank Louis Jenner £25 for using his premises as a common gaming house. Jenner, aged 41, was represented by Mr. Noble, who entered a plea of guilty on his behalf. According to Chief-Detective Hammond, Jenner did his betting under cover of a confectionery business at 101 Symonds Street. He had been doing a good bit of betting, but was in a small -way only. “Yesterday he took £29 in bets," added the chief detective. Mr. Noble stressed the fact that Jenner was making no attempt to deny the charge, but was frankly admittingthe offence. “He is a married man with four children between the ages of five and thirteen years,’’ said counsel. It was mentioned that the fine would be paid immediately, but default was fixed at two months’ imprisonment.
