MENACE ON ROAD
CYCLISTS WITHOUT LIGHTS MOTORISTS’ STRICTURES Cyclists who ride without lights and have no reflectors were strongly condemned by members of the Auckland Automobile Association last evening. “Eighty per cent, of the cyclists do not comply with the regulations,” asserted Mr. G. W. Hutchison, following upon a complaint from Mr. F. M. Winstone of the danger cyclists without tail-lights presented to motorists. He suggested that a. by-law should be framed compelling riders to have taillights affixed to their machines. On a dark winter’s evening on the Great South Road, Mr. F. G. Farrell declared he counted 26 cyclists without lights between Otahuhu and Penrose, “They are a menace on the road,” he added. Mr. Grayson added that he understood the Lights and Vehicles Act was being redrafted by the newly-constit-uted Transport Board. “Cyclists don’t seem to value their lives at all,” commented a member. The council unanimously decided to direct the attention of the police to the fact that non-observance of the regulations by cyclists in regard to headlights and rear reflectors was continuing.
