Maori Hockey Team’s Decision BAD LUCK FEARED Several attempts bave been made by photographers to obtain a photograph of the Rangitaiki hockey team at the Remuera hockey ground this week, but without success. The captain of the team, of which all members are Maoris, is very superstitious, and she claims “that if a photograph is taken before the game the team will have bad luck. This morning it was agreed that a photograph should be taken after the match, but when it was found after the game that the team would have to play again this afternoon, no amount of persuasion would induce the captain to agree to a picture being taken. This team is unique, as all members of it are Maoris, and so far it has not been beaten. Some of the members play in bare feet and at the interval some enjoy oranges and cigarettes. The captain and some members of the team are descendants of Te Kooti (Te Turuke Rikirangi), founder of the Ringatu religion, which is on a par with the Ratana belief in Wanganui and the King Country, and Te Whitiism and Tohu-ism in Taranaki.
