THREE BUSY MONTHS
WORK IN LOWER COURTS FIGURES SHOW INCREASES During the quarter ending June 30 the work of the Police and Magistrate’s Courts showed a general increase, the business being considerably greater than that put through during the first three months of the year. The number of criminal charges against men was 2,377 and the number against women 236, making a total of 2,613. The figures for the previous quarter were 2,095 and 164 respectively, a total of 2,259. There were S 3 civil and 11G criminal sittings during the quarter, compared with 78 civil and 118 criminal sittings in tho previous quarter. Civil fees' amounted to £4,424 17s, criminal fees to £589 10s 4d, and fines to £3,947 ISs 4d, a total of £8,962 5s Sd. The respective figures for the previous three months were £4,035 11s; £493 Is 5d and £1,351 19s lOd, a total of £5,880 12s 3d. A total of 4,068 plaints were entered, tho total amount sued for being £113,285 16s lOd, as against 3.764 plaints for a total of £73,824 Is 3d in tho previous quarter. During the three months 475 claims for pensions were filed and of this number 257 were granted, 71 were refused and 117 were held over for further consideration.
