MORRINSVILLE NOTES

A block of 200 acres of land at Kiwitahi, near the railway station, recently acquired by Mr. J. B. Thomas, is being sown wholly with soft turnips. It will be interesting to watch the results from the area, as it is said j to be the largest sowing which has been made in Waikato for many years. The Mayor’s fund for the relief of earthquake sufferers, up to Tuesday, j totalled £194 2s lid. The Morrinsville Volunteer Fire Brigade held its annual meeting this week. The following officers were elected: —Superintendent. Mr. W. E. Grigg: deputy, Mr. J. Pretty; foreman and secretary, Mr. T. E. Goble: treasurer. Mr. E. Grigg; senior and i junior branchmen, Messrs. G. Lingacd and G. Simpson; senior and junior haydrantmen. Messrs. R. H. Goble and F. A. J. Green; union man, Mr. T. J. Donovan. An instance of what can be produced from Waikato land in small areas is made manifest by the opera - . tions of Mr. H. Williams, of Morrinsj ville. He has grazed and milked two cows on two acres on the Kiwitahi Road this season, and his returns are 660.51 b butter-fat, the cash value of which is approximately £SO. The ■ acreage was manured early last autumn with superphosphate and slag. While it is generally admitted that top-dressing is standing wonderfully i to Waikato lands, an instance of where it can be overdone is provided in the * Morrinsville district. On adjoining farms 3 cwt and IS cjvt. of fertiliser respectively was used on a certain j acreage. The class of land was the same, but that treated with the lesser ■ amount of manure looks capable of j producing by far the better results. ! Where the heavy application was given i the grass has been practically “pulled’* 1 out of the ground.
