RATES INCREASED AT THAMES

(From Our Oxen Correspondent) THAMES, Tuesday. The question of striking rates for the ensuing year was discussed at a special meeting of the Thames Borough Council. » After a lengthy examination of the borough’s finance, the estimates as submitted by the borough treasurer, Mr. A. Chapman, were adopted, and a consolidated rate of 19 l-20d was struck. As compared with last year, this is an increase of almost a penny in the £. The reason for the increase is due to the large amount (£9.000) outstanding for rates. Approximately £ 6,000 of the amount owing is due for last year’s rates. The council decided to take legal proceedings for rate money owing for 1926-27. It was also resolved that 21 per cent, discount be allowed on all last year’s rates if paid by August 31.
