SURPLUS OF £580,000
NEW SOUTH WALES TAXES TO BE REDUCED HEAVY RAILWAY LOSS Reed. 9.5 a.m. SYDNEY, Today. A surplus of £580,000 on the Consolidated Revenue Fund was disclosed in the financial statement issued by the State Treasurer, Mr, B. S. B. Stevens. Tax relief is promised. The railways showed a deficit of £1,200,000; but the receipts exceeded last year’s figures by £500,000. Increased powers given to the Tax Commissioner resulted in £250,000 extra being collected from those evading the tax. A reduction in harbour dues is likely, as the Harbour Trust showed a surplus of £115,000 for the year.
