FIRE BRIGADE AFFAIRS
SERVICE AT TAKAPUNA If a scheme at present under review by the Fire Brigade Committee of the Takapuna Borough Council comes to fruition, the present singlestoreyed fire station in The Strand will have a second storey added to it in the near future. The addition svill be used as a social and recreation hall for members of the brigade, who have agreed to find the money for the undertaking provided the borough council guarantees to meet interest and sinking fund charges. These charges will be deducted from the brigade's retaining fees. It is the intention of the council to erect a siren upon the top of the borough council chambers, which will replace the present gong installed at the tire station. The issue of service medals and bars to those who have already qualified for them is exercising the minds of brigade officers, the question of cost being the stumbling block. However, the borough council has agreed, subject to its possessing the requisite authority, to defray the cost of these service emblems of volunteer members of tile brigade. In the last four months only two fires have occurred in Takapuna, good work being done by the brigade in both cases. The total damage amounted to an estimated sum of £ 500, as against total insurances of £ 2,500. The Takapuna Borough Council has put on record its appreciation of the good work of the brigade in the matter of fire protection throughout the borough.
