HARDWARE STORE FIRE

EIGHT ENGINES FIGHT FLAMES DAMAGE AT WELLINGTON Press Association WELLINGTON, Sunday. A fire in the building of A. and T. Burt, Limited, hardware merchants, Courtenay Place, last evening, caused considerable damage. The fire already had a good hold when the alarm was given at 6.40 o’clock and a very large crowd soon assembled to watch the operations of the brigade, which brought eight engines into use. The building is of brick with an iron roof and has two floors. The fire, which evidently started in the packing room, was at its worst at the rear of the building, where the workhouse is situated, and in order to cope with it the brigade operated largely from York Street. The brigade prevented the flames from spreading to adjoining buildings and after working for an hour and a-half suppressed the fire. Considerable damage was caused by fire and water.
