OPOTIKI COUNCIL

The monthly meeting of the Opotiki County Council was held on Friday.

A letter was received from Mr. K. S. Williams, M.P., forwarding a letter received by him from the Minister of Public Works, in which the latter said he would be pleased to see if the plans for the erection of a bridge over the Haparapara River could be expedited. The bridge is on the main East Coast road now in course of construction to Cape Runaway. Replies were received from the Tauranga, Whakatane and Rotorua County Councils on the subject of the proposed sitting of a native rates commission in the Bay of Plenty. Mr. C. H. Clinkard, M.P., wrote stating that he was placing the question before the Minister of Native Affairs. On the suggestion of the chairman, the council decided to contribute £2l toward the earthquake relief fund. In accordance with notice given at the previous meeting Cr. W. A. Butler moved that the county engineer be asked to resign. Cr. F. C. Parkinson seconded the motion pro forma and then moved as an amendment that the matter be held over for three months. Seconded by Cr. Joblin. The amendment and the motion, when put to the meeting, were both defeated.
