DEATH OF A CHIEF
MONSTER TANGI HELD EIGHT BULLOCKS FOR MEAL (Krorn Our Own Correspondent) MORRINSVILLE, Friday. Hundreds of Maoris visited Morrinsville this week to pay their last respects to the late Tai-ngakawa Tamehana te Waharoa, paramount chief of Waikato. Among the mourners were “King” Rata Mahuta and Princess Te Puea llerangi. It is estimated that the cost of feeding the assemblage at the tangi would exceed £3OO. Eight bullocks and many pigs were included in the menu, while the standing order for bread was 100 loaves a day. Other items from the commissariat are: Six tons of potatoes, half a ton of sugar, one chest of tea, two crates of cheese, 2cwt. of butter, a case of jam, and liewt. of rice. The Rev. E. Karaka is in charge of the pa.
