FOR ’QUAKE RELIEF
AUCKLAND TROTTING CLUB’S PLANS SPECIAL PERMIT SOUGHT The Auckland Trotting Club, ever willing to lend a helping hand in deserving cases, has formulated the idea of holding a fixture shortly, when all profits will be de-. voted toward alleviating the distress and havoc caused by the re- ! cent ’quakes. At a meeting of the Auckland Trotting Club Committee, presided over by the president. Mr. John Howe, it was decided to apply for a special permit to hold a benefit trotting fixture in aid of the earthquake sufferers’ fund. Final arrangements were held over pending a favourable reply from the Minister of Internal Affairs. Numerous grants of a charitable nature were allotted to deserving institutions, and accounts amounting to £S2S j ««* Sd were passed for payment. Training Facilities The question of laying down a cinder track at Epsom was discussed at length, the project meeting with general approval, although some doubt was expressed as to the suitability of the soil formation for the success of the undertaking. Members favoured putting down the outer portion of the present clay training circuit in cinders to afford facilities for owners and trainers during bad weather. It was filially decided to test the suitability of the track for the proposed scheme by laying down a cinder stretch for the distance of a furlong along the back straight. The secretary reported that debenture holders were responding splendidly to the circular calling for an increased loan at a lower rate of interest. The success of the venture was practically assured, and when finalised the position regarding the installation of the electric totalisator would be further defined. It was decided to hold the question of fixing the Otahuhu Club’s rental for the forthcoming season over till after the annual meeting in August. The chairman said the. success of the re- I cord winter fixture held under adverse conditions was a subject for congratulation to all concerned, and proved that the light harness sports has lost none of its popularity in this province.
