ST. MARY’S COLLEGE
OPENING TOMORROW NUNS’ RECORD OF SERVICE St. Mary’s High School, Ponsonby, tho oldest educational institution in New Zealand, will enter a fresh phase of its existence tomorrow when the recently-erected two-storeyed building, in New Street, will be opened and blessed by Bishop Cleary. The new structure dignified now by the title of college, will replace the wooden building that has served educational needs of the Sisters of Mercy for so long. For nearly SO years, the Sisters who were the pioneers of Catholic education in New Zealand, have devoted their lives and talents to the cause of education, but in so doing were not unmindful of the charitable duties of visiting and nursing the sick and suffering. For this they have sought no material reward for themselves, but, nevertheless, in undertaking the new burden of erecting a building necessary to aid the efficient fulfilment of their educational duties, they have to seek the aid of friends, Catholic and non-Catholic. The new college, built in Spanish Mission style, is an architectural adornment to the city, and its bright, wellventilated and commodious classrooms will make school life pleasant for both teachers and pupils. The large balcony and quaint tower overlook the waters of the Waitemata. A large crowd of friends and wellwishers is expected to be present at the opening ceremony which will take place at three o’clock tomorrow afternoon.
