City’s Second Attempt
WILL FIND DEVONPORT LIARD Saturday’s Feature League Clash ONCE again, the so far invincible Shore League XIII. will entertain the fans at Carlaw Park with its bright football when it meets City in the feature game on the main area at Carlaw Park tomorrow. Everything points to a slashing game and, with the playing conditions favourable, there should be jin abundance of thrilling, open play. Giving in j the marked improvement shown by the City Leaguers in recent matches, the odds must go slightly in favour of the seasiders who, to date, have an astounding record.
When City met Shore in the first, round it played a solid forward battle, ] land had it been favoured with a set: of reliable backs it had the best j chance of putting the Shore side away. With the lesson it learned in that game City started to improve its rearguard line, and in recent matches the rearguarders, assisted by the services of McLaughlen, at centre, have given some fine exhibitions. City is now a strong side, with hefty, hardworking forwards and good backs. But turning to Shore in recent games fans have seen it as a weakened side owing to many of its best players being on the sick list. According to the teams list it will field its best thirteen tomorrow, and while City's improved line of backs lias shone out against other teams, the question arises how will they fare against the elusive Shore line with all its penetrating ability. On the No. 2 ground Ponsonby will I meet Richmond. The latter will be considerably strengthened and may cause a surprise. At the Domain Marist will play Kingsland "while Newton will try conclusions with Ellerslie at Ellerslie. The final of the senior grade B competition between Otahuhu and Point Chevalier will be decided as a curtain-raiser to the principal match. Junior grade competitions will be continued.

A Close Game Although the conditions were far from favourable, the Richmond-Pon-sonby third grade game, played on Carlaw Park last Saturday as a curtainraiser to the senior match, was a great game from beginning to end. The score, 2—o, in favour of the Ponies, gives a
THE “TALKIES”
There can be no doubt whatever that the "Talkies” have come to stay. One has only to see the hundreds that flock nightly to those theatres that feature falking programmes, to understand that this revolution in motion-pictures has met with the approval of the public. Marshall’s Fospherine. too. has won the approbation of the majority. Thousands of people swear by “Marshall’s” as a nerve-tonic that is prompt and sure in giving new life and energy to the run-down and overtired. "Marshall’s” feeds those starved nerves the phosphorus which they are unable to obtain from your ordinary everyday food. Rejuvenates and reinforces the nervous sysem. Imparts new life and energy to both mind and body. Get "Marshall’s” into your home snd ; into your system at once! I fair indication of how even the two j sides were. Ponsonby was strong in the forward division and undoubtedly its most outstanding packman was the back row player, Thompson. Deere got the winning two points for his side with a penalty kick, resulting from off-side play. * * * The Ponies are naturally delighted with their win, and so they should be, for it was the first defeat that the Richmond thirds had suffered this year, while last season it went right through the competition undefeated. * * * No Score Another hard-fought junior game took place on the Domain when the Richmond fourth grade met Kingsland. There was no score. As with most other games, this match was played on ! a very heavy ground, which spoiled j any spectacular play. For Kingsland ! the shining lights were Tunnicliffe at j five-eight 1 1 , and Christmas, another rearguarder, who proved himself most | I reliable. Richmond’s crack pair was j | Grubb at half and McKinnon, fiveeighth.
ST. LUKE’S V. EDEN
CHAMPIONSHIP HOCKEY STRUGGLE FOR SECOND PLACE Senior hockey- is at present in an interesting position. Somerville head the competition and Mount Eden stand second, with St. Luke’s third, one point behind. At Remuera tomorrow St. Luke’s is to cross sticks with Mount Eden, and as so much depends on the match a keen contest is assured. Both teams have exhibited good hockey this season and if enthusiasm does not efface clearheadedness, the game should be well worth watching. Somerville will bo fully extended against Varsity, and Epiphany will give Shore a good run for it, though there is little chance of the former winning.
